Epic understands that adults comprehend and retain information better if multiple senses are stimulated during learning activities.
We make training programs interesting by combining adult learning methodology with the use of technology.
Our training programs are designed to engage the audience and allow them to participate in the learning experience. This method of instruction is proven to increase knowledge transfer and create value for the client.
Epic combines the use of high end multimedia authoring linked with a 3D Virtual Plant Environment to accomplish this.
One of the tools used to enhance the learning experience is OpSim. OpSim is designed to make use of the engineering data (primarily 3D CAD data) which is created during the design and construction of a facility. OpSim uses this data to create a Virtual Plant Model which has an easy to use interface and shallow learning curve. This gives all operations personnel the ability to navigate through the facility in a three dimensional environment without having to learn a complex CAD program.

OpSim provides several functions which may be used during the entire life cycle of the project. Some of the functions are as follows:
Virtual facility walk downs
- Enhance the training experience through a lifelike training environment
- Operator competency assessment and administration capabilities
System isolation and animated system flows
- System isolation allows students to truly understand how a system functions within the facility
- Record / replay 3D flow paths
- Allows systems to be isolated for troubleshooting
- Identify lockout/isolation points within a system
Organization by systems, sub-systems and tagged items
- Allows easy identification of equipment within a system
- Create equipment lists for a system
Location of tagged equipment through a tag search engine
- Simple search based on partial or complete tag numbers or equipment descriptions
Location of equipment by touring the Virtual Plant Model
- Equipment which has been visually located may be clicked on to identify tag numbers, descriptions, attributes, etc.
Isolation of individual equipment or systems
- All tagged equipment/systems have a view/hide control checkbox
Create visually enhanced documents
- Enhance documents using the screen and 3D animation capture capabilities which may be embedded into any Windows based application
Verify O&M procedures in a virtual environment before the facility is fully constructed
- Facilitates virtual walk down of procedures prior to facility completion
Link to multimedia sources
- Microsoft PowerPoint presentations may be linked to the Virtual Plant Model
- enabling a virtual tour of the facility using bookmarks stored within OpSim

Using the engineering data created during the design and construction throughout the lifecycle of a facility creates value for a product which normally is abandoned after construction. The XML data used to build the OpSim virtual environment can be easily re-used in other applications to lower life cycle data management and operations costs. The use of this data can have the following benefits:
O&M Procedures
- Higher quality and faster development and validation
- More consistency and reuse
- Better change management
- Faster startup / reduced time to production
Multimedia Operator Training & Competency Assessment
- Improved operator comprehension and retention
- Reduce time and costs associated with training facility operators from one process system to another
- Empower new facility operators with the knowledge and experience of seasoned operators within a digital facility model
- More accurate competency and skills assessment
- Reduced training and competency assurance costs due to performing assessments in a classroom environment at any location
- Reduce the need for a dedicated facility for performing site specific training programs
- Reduce start up delays by allowing operators to become proficient before the facility construction is completed
- Reduce time / cost for cross-training & nationalization
- Reduce downtime / improved production
- Improved safety / reduce risk of accidents
Streamlined Productivity
- Enhanced operations training, review and digital support results in increased run-time, production cost savings and a safer work environment.
Startup and Commissioning
- Simultaneously improve the speed and quality of procedure development and validation as well as turnover system testing, getting you to production sooner and at a lower cost.>
Change Management
- Reduce time and costs associated with keeping procedures and OSHA inspection records up-to-date by synchronizing with engineering changes.
Low implementation cost due to using the engineering data that is developed during the engineering of the facility
